Artificial Intelligence vs Machine Learning

How AI and machine learning relate, and why program titles use them differently.

Last reviewed 1 November 2026

The relationship

Artificial intelligence is the broad field of building systems that perform tasks associated with intelligent behaviour. Machine learning is a major approach within it: methods that learn patterns from data instead of following only hand-written rules. Deep learning is a subset of machine learning that uses layered neural networks.

What this means for program titles

  • A program titled Artificial Intelligence usually covers a wider set of topics: search, reasoning, knowledge, learning, perception, language and often ethics.
  • A program titled Machine Learning concentrates on learning methods, statistics and model development.
  • Titles such as Applied AI, AI Engineering or Generative AI point to a practical or product focus.

Titles are not standardized. Read the curriculum and the stated specialization rather than relying on the name.

How this directory treats them

We include standalone AI and machine learning programs, broader programs with a formally named AI pathway, and machine learning programs with substantial documented AI content. A program with a single optional AI elective is not included.
