Why it matters
Programs differ widely in how much mathematics and programming they require. Some start from scratch; others assume prior study.
Typical areas
- Programming. Many programs use Python, though languages vary. Some programs teach programming first; others require it before you start.
- Mathematics. Commonly linear algebra, calculus, probability and statistics. Applied or business-oriented programs may need less.
- Prior degree and experience. Postgraduate and professional programs often expect a prior degree or work experience.
How this directory records requirements
Each requirement is recorded separately as required, recommended, not required or not stated, and only when the official page says so. If a page lists no requirements, we record that no requirements were stated. We never treat missing entry requirements as a sign that a program is suitable for beginners.
What to do before you apply
Read the admissions page, look at the first-term modules, and ask the provider what background successful students had. If you are unsure, a preparatory short course can help you test your readiness before committing to a longer program.
